Description

The European Union is seeking to regulate controversial new applications of artificial intelligence. Over the past year, the European Parliament has thus been considering a new regulation proposal, the “Artificial Intelligence Act” (AIA), which aims to prohibit applications of AI considered unacceptable, while placing constraints on other uses deemed “risky” yet not beyond the pale. In this piece written for the Heinrich Böll Stiftung Asia, Alexandre Erler offers some thoughts on the current draft of the AIA: in particular, he ponders whether the scope of the prohibitions it introduces is adequate, and whether such prohibitions can be given a proper justification.
